Homeless people in Pakistan:
Pakistan's population is currently estimated to be 220 million people. With a massive expansion, the country's housing and living standards are being challenged. The disparity between homeless individuals and those who live well in urban areas appears to be rising.
In Pakistan, it is estimated that around 20 million people lack sufficient housing. Statistics suggest that 35% of the population lives in poverty, with many living in temporary homes and slums. Women and children are adversely impacted by homelessness in Pakistan due to malnutrition, lack of healthcare, and lack of access to education.
Today, however, at least 150 million people are projected to be homeless around the World, with 1.6 billion people lacking adequate or appropriate housing. It's impossible to imagine the misery of 150 million people who don't have access to proper housing, water, or sanitation. Consider the impact of 150 million people demanding their human rights and asserting their political voice.
Through the Worldwide Homelessness Campaign, The Shift has joined with more than 30 groups from 20 countries worldwide to elevate the voices of individuals experiencing homelessness. We've sent a Call to Action to hundreds of government leaders in over 150 nations, urging them to take immediate action to end homelessness.
Problems faced by the homeless peoples of Pakistan:
The homeless population does not have access to enough nutrition, safe drinking water, or other fundamental essentials of life. They lack access to health care and frequently suffer from chronic illnesses, exacerbated by difficult living situations such as sleeping outside, eating cheap starchy food and living in close quarters with other unwell individuals in social service agencies. Homelessness is also a financial issue.
The primary cause of Homelessness in Pakistan:
Poverty, unemployment, mental illness, drug addiction, a lack of cheap housing, overcrowding, fast urbanization, slums, and other natural and human-caused calamities are the primary causes of homelessness in Pakistan.
Solution of Homelessness:
The key solution for homeless people is inexpensive and accessible housing and social services to assist persons in overcoming other difficulties. Our government must significantly increase spending to make housing affordable for low-income people to prevent homelessness across the country
Benefits of Shelter Program for Homeless peoples:
The shelter is a basic human need that everyone has the right to have. Shelter and cheap housing give security, personal safety, and weather protection and prevent illness and sickness.
How HRF is helping to solve this Problem by their Shelter Program
HRF Pakistan has the vision to protect, assist and enable the most vulnerable and ultra-poor. In this context, we initiated a permanent shelter program to protect the most susceptible and extremely needy families, i.e., women-headed households, chronic patients, elderly and child-headed families. This strategy is in line with the Govt. of Pakistan's present policy for providing low-cost housing for the lower-income group. This program is designed to provide permanent shelters for families living in dilapidated accommodation. HRF started its shelter program by providing a beautiful and well-built one-room home to its beneficiary at their place of origin. The purpose is not to displace the deserved families and offer them safe living in their old locality.
The success story of HRF
The HRF field team identified several families living in tents, temporary shelters, and dilapidated sheds in different parts of the country. The problems associated with such ramshackle living conditions are obviously in the shape of disease and ill health of the family members. It is especially very difficult for the children to cope with the harsh weather conditions. We selected Mr. Shams ul Haq, of Mardan district, to construct a one-room shelter, who was living in the broken-down room. He has a wife and four children dependent on him. He is an unskilled daily wager and earns only PKR.700/- per day. If he finds any work, even this money was not sufficient for the subsistence of his family. He has neither an asset nor a regular source of income to run his daily affairs. Building a well build room/shelter was near to impossible for his family.
HRF built a very spacious room of 238 square feet. As per the SPHERE standards, it can accommodate six-person people easily. It is a low-cost but excellent one-room shelter. Shams and his family are incredibly delighted and grateful to HRF. The local people also acknowledge this significant contribution of HRF. They are pleased and termed it a blessing in tough days of a pandemic where no daily work was available for the head of the family. HRF provides shelter plus one toilet to provide better sanitation and hygiene for vulnerable families and save the money spent on diseases and health. It will enable them to spend money on education and improve their living standard.
